Celebrating Queensland Youth Week

Queensland Youth Week is a time to recognise and celebrate the incredible contributions of young people in our communities. At YMCA Queensland, we believe in empowering youth by providing them with opportunities to lead, learn, and make a meaningful impact. Whether they are volunteers, youth workers, students, or young leaders, the Y is proud to support and nurture the next generation of changemakers.
This year, we’re shining a spotlight on the young people who work and volunteer across Y Queensland and the difference they make in their communities every day. From our Op Shop volunteers and youth workers to students in our alternative education programs and young professionals in our head office, the Y is a place where young people thrive.
Meet the Young People Making a Difference
As part of QLD Youth Week, we’re sharing stories from inspiring young individuals across Y Queensland.
🔹 Savannah – Volunteer at Y Op Shops
Savannah is one of our passionate volunteers at YMCA Op Shops. Through her dedication, she helps support the local community by ensuring pre-loved items find a new home while raising funds for YMCA Queensland programs. Volunteers like Savannah are the heart of our Op Shops, contributing to sustainability and community wellbeing.
🔹 Queensland Youth Parliament (QYP) Members
The YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament (QYP) provides young people with a platform to voice their ideas and influence real legislative change. QYP participants, known as Youth Members, represent their electorates and engage with politicians, debate pressing issues, and develop leadership and public speaking skills. These young leaders are shaping the future of Queensland with their passion and advocacy.
🔹 Young Staff at Y Queensland Head Office
At Y Queensland’s head office, young professionals play a crucial role in areas such as marketing, program development, and community engagement. Their fresh ideas and innovative thinking help drive our mission forward, ensuring we continue to provide impactful programs and services across the state.
🔹 Students from Y Schools Queensland
Y Schools Queensland provides an alternative education pathway for students who need a flexible and supportive learning environment. With 11 campuses across the state, Y Schools helps students from Year 7 to Year 12 build confidence, develop essential skills, and prepare for their future. By fostering a nurturing and individualised approach to education, we empower young people to succeed.
🔹 Members from Youth Community Centres
Y Queensland operates several youth-led community centres, including The Ridge, The Villa, The Space, The Link, and The Buzz. These centres provide a safe and inclusive environment where young people can connect, participate in activities, and build a strong sense of community. From basketball and music to gaming and cultural events, these centres are shaped by the interests and needs of the youth they serve.
Youth Programs at Y Queensland
At Y Queensland, we offer a range of programs designed to support, educate, and inspire young people.
YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament (QYP)
The YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament is a unique opportunity for young people to drive real change. Each year, Youth Members engage in a six-month program where they work in teams to draft bills proposing legislative reforms they are passionate about. The program culminates in an official sitting week at Parliament House in Brisbane, where participants debate their proposed laws. Beyond politics, QYP builds confidence, leadership skills, and lifelong friendships.

Y Schools Queensland
Not all students thrive in a traditional school setting. Y Schools Queensland offers an alternative education model designed for students who need a more personalized approach to learning. Our schools provide a supportive environment with a strong focus on wellbeing, ensuring every student has the tools and resources they need to succeed in their own way.

Youth-Led Community Centres
Many of our community centres are designed specifically for young people, offering activities and programs that cater to their interests. Whether it’s sports, creative arts, gaming, or cultural initiatives, these centres give youth a space to express themselves, build friendships, and develop their confidence. Our centres also run workshops and events that provide valuable life skills and personal development opportunities.

Y Camping
Outdoor adventures have a powerful impact on personal growth. YMCA Camping provides young people with unforgettable experiences in nature, helping them develop leadership and teamwork skills. Located just 35 minutes north of Brisbane, our camp offers a range of activities, including rock climbing, canoeing, and high ropes courses. Schools, community groups, and youth organizations can participate in structured camp programs tailored to their needs.
